Afton's Afghan

This is the Blanket Grandma Turner (Tyson's Grandma) made for Afton when she was born. Since then I have been trying to figure out the patter because it's so amazing!

Yes, it would have been easier to just ask for the pattern but it was fun trying to figure it out on my own.

Well, I finally did it so I thought I would share because it really is one of the neatest patterns I have ever seen. It gives the afghan a 3D look and I love it.

So I kind of came up with a pattern but it was kind of hard to explain so I decided to do a picture tutorial. (also, I always wanted to try a picture tutorial) It's not the best but here it goes.

This is the actual pattern I came up with:

Grandma's 3D Baby Afghan

Hook Size H

Lion Brand Pound of Love: pastel Pink

Row 1: Using this technique of a no chain foundation, 122 dc

Row 2: ch 3, 3 dc in next dc. (ch3, sk next 2 dc, 3 dc in next dc) 40 times. DC in last dc

Row 3: ch 3, (working behind the ch 3 of previous round, 3 Bpdc in 1st dc in 3 dc set, ch 3) 40 times. 3 bpdc in 1st dc in last 3 dc set. Dc in last turning ch of previous row.

Repeat row three until desired length

Last row: ch 3, (dc in next 3 dc, dc in ch 3 sp ) repeat to the end of the row. Dc in last turning ch. fasten off and weave in ends.

Starting on Row 3-

Ch 3. Yarn over,

Going behind the ch 3 of previous row

bpdc in the first dc of next 3 dc set

(Going around the front of the stitch)

(Yarn over, pull through, finish dc)

When making the next bpdc in the set of 3, do it the same way but make sure the second one goes on top of the first one, not beneath it. (which mean you may need to pull down the 1st st in order to get the second one on top of it) So the three stack on top of each other. You'll get a totally different look if you do the dc under the previous one.

Wow that was not an awesome attempt to explain that but I hope it helped even a little. I love this blanket and I think I'm gong to make lots. It goes pretty fast too.

The start of Christmas Projects

These are only a couple of projects I've been working on for Christmas gifts. These are the only ones I can post right now (in case the recipient would look on here)

The first one is a bear I made for Bailey for her birthday. She loves dolls and stuffed animals so I thought it would be fun to make up a pattern and I crocheted it out of some yarn I got from Grandma Brown.

It's not fabulous but I think it'll be fun for her.

This is a pattern I found and loved. The only problem is I picked horrible colors. I love the pattern though and it was so easy to make. I'll probably use this pattern again.

Projects in Gabriel's Room

I have been working on some projects for Gabriel's room. Last year for his first birthday, I made him a scrapbook birthday frame. I used the theme from his birthday party and his party invitation to decorate these 12x12 wood frames. I loved it and so I just finished (er, 99.8% finished) his 2nd birthday frame. The Hobby Lobby and the Michaels here don't have the numbers that I used for his last frame :( I don't know where to find one. Keep your eyes out for a wooden 2 for me!

I hung them up on his bedroom wall.

Pat the Bunny 1st birthday.
It's hard to see but I stamped blue polka dots on the peach paper, like the book.

Lightening McQueen 2nd birthday.
I made felt lightning keychains as party favors for the kids. I took off the keyring for this one and attached it.

Gabriel's room is a space themed room with an outer space bed set, solar system paintings, planetarium nightlight, etc... I found this embroidery pattern online. It was perfect! It was simple to do and very cute. Then I put together a little wall hanging with these fat quarters on clearance at Joann's for 50cents! They are the perfect colors of his room and I thought they worked together great.

Then I made this bean bag chair for him. I made a basic bean bag out of durable upholstery fabric, stuffed it will packing peanuts, and then put the cute slipcover over it. His room is a work in progress but I'm really liking the progress :)

Kids slipcovered chair

Last year, I bought this Pottery Barn Kids rocking chair at a garage sale for $1. You can see why it was only $1.

I made a slipcover for it, but never got around to putting the skirt on until this morning. But I am so happy it's finally done.

Hairpin Lace Afghan

I'm in love with Hairpin lace now. On Ravelry I saw a few things that looked so cool and I had never heard of it before, so I did some research, got me a loom (mine was $5 at a craft store) and started off.

There are lots of ways to make your own loom too but I was lazy. Someday Tyson is going to make me an AWESOME one out of wood with some designs in it...someday.

This is the first and only thing I have made so far. It's a baby blanket for my SIL's new baby girl.

I would do a tutorial but there are much better ones out there than I could do Like the one here I used.

I really messed upon the first blanket. I read the directions to connect them wrong and so it ended being completely diagonal. So I started over. Luckily these are easy to do and they work up quickly

The end result with fringes. I could have crocheted a border but I decided this was easier.

I really loved doing this and I can't wait to do more. I want to do some bookmarks too. Those are really pretty.

Repurposed shirt quilt

I finally made something!!!! Remember how I used to make lots of things? It is a distant memory at this point, but I did do something!

I made this baby boy quilt from his Daddy's old button up plaid shirts.

I cut up the back piece into the biggest rectangle I could make and then cut it in half lengthwise. Then each was cut up into 3.5" strips and sewn together to make the columns. The sashing and backing was from a white sheet that we don't use anymore. The sashing was also 3.5". I machine quilted it with a walking foot-just a simple stitch in the ditch. For the binding, I pieced together different lengths of 3.5" width shirt fabric. If you cut up the very top of the back, right underneath the collar, the fabric is doubled, so you only have to cut once to get 2 pieces.

Pretty simple, but with lots of significance for me and it was nice that it didn't cost anything :). I can't wait to use it when he gets here!

Newborn Hanging Nest

My SIL Celeste made a request that we figure out how to make these hanging hammocks and "potato sacs" that are SO DARLING in newborn shoots. Seriously, if you haven't seen them before google newborn hammock photo shoot or something cause they are the cutest!

Anyway, so while we were in Boise with them, Celeste and I made up a pattern. The hammock didn't work out so well (I'm going to try again when I have more time) but the potato sac turned out good I thought. But to us it looked more like one of those round hanging bird's nests, so that what it's called.

Here's the pattern I wrote out. It's my first pattern ever so if it doesn't make sense I'm sorry. Let me know what to fix so I can get better.

I'm extrememly sad we didn't have an actual newborn to try this out on cause I'm not positive on the sizing but it's easy to make bigger if needs be.

And it's really more fun to do photo shoots with a real baby instead of your two-year-old's baby doll.

So I thought it turned out fun and I want to do more designs with different stitches. And maybe embellish it with a ribbon or flower or something cute like that.

Go Cubs

I made this for Jason for his Birthday. He's a big Cubs fan. it's made of small granny squares sewn together. I wasn't super impressed with how it turned out but it was the first chart I made of anything so I guess I can live with it. I have the chart here.

The "b" is kind of fat

I sewed on some fleece to the back so you couldn't see all the ties and strings.

PS. on a previous post I had a link on how to do a "Magic Loop" after re-sewing at least 20 little squares, I advise you to beware if you use this stitch! Maybe it was the yarn I used but most of the loops came undone. I was so frustrated. So from now on, I'm not going to use it.

Whale Tale

I bought this CUTE cotton print while on vacation in Baltimore/North Carolina. I didn't know what I was going to make with it, but I had to have it so I just bought a yard. Then I got home to discover Gabe's grandma bought him a little table and chair from IKEA. So darling, but white, and he likes to eat at the table so it gets messy quick. It hit me then, a wipe down tablecloth! So I bought some 8 gauge vinyl at Joanns and made 2 fitted tablecloths. I made one of the cotton and one of the vinyl so that I can make more cotton tablecloths in the future and switch them out. I'm thinking about a tablecloth for every holiday... ambitious, I know. SO easy and so cute, if I say so myself :)

Kindle Cover

I made Lexie a Kindle cover for her house-warming/going on tour/birthday present. I kind of just made the actual case up so I didn't have instructions. I embroidered the VanGuard symbol on it. It was a fun/frustrating project. It was fun doing it but it was frustrating it didn't turn out like I wanted. Oh well. Can't win 'em all.

I love crocheting and I'm pretty good at it. But I have always wanted to be able to knit. I think it looks more professional and intricate. Well, welcome to my first every knitting project! It's a little blue kimono, just in time for it to get hot again in Tucson

It's funny, I started this about 6 months ago, came to a wall, where I COULD NOT understand what the pattern was saying, so I put it away. I brought it out a week or two ago and Voila! Miraculously, I understood. Once I got past that little bump in the road, this was a fairly easy project. I'm quite pleased with the way it turned out for a beginner. I spend hours on Lion Brand yarn's website, pouring over patterns. It is very addicting. It's where I get most of my projects from. Check it out!

New Whiteboard

I've seen this Idea a couple of time and I really liked it so this time I decided to try it. I found the idea here, but it's a link to a link to a link, so I decided to do a mini tutorial on it. It's not very hard to do really

(Although, theirs are much cooler than mine, and I'm still not sure I like my fabric choice. I may change it soon)

So,

1. Find an old picture frame (with the glass in it).

I found mine at DI

2. Sand it and paint it

3. Cover the backing, or picture that was in it with your choice of fabric.

The other tutorials said to just glue gun the fabric onto the back, But Tyson had some spray on adhesive I wanted to try. It worked great so I guess any way you want to do it

4. Then put it together.

Place the glass in the frame, then put your fabric-covered backing onto the glass and voila

You will actually be writing on the glass and it works just like a regular white board. When I switch my fabrics I'll post another pic and maybe you'll be more excited :)

Freezer Paper Stencil Pillow

Here is some more Freezer Paper Stenciling. I loved what Chelsea did with hers, so I decided to give it a try for my SIL's birthday coming up. I love all the numbers people have been using in decorating lately and how they put them in unexpected places, and I know my SIL has been into it as well, so I decided to do a number 5 pillow (she has 5 people in her family). A few people asked for more detail on how to use Freezer Paper for Stencils. There are tons of great tutorials online, so this is just the basics, but there really isn't much to it.

You can print right on Freezer Paper. I found that out after I printed it out on regular paper, cut it out, and then traced it onto the freezer paper, but either way works just fine. Just make sure you have the wax side down, paper side up. Cut out your stencil with an exacto or whatever you have handy.

Then you put your iron on the temperature it needs to be for the fabric you are using and iron the stencil on the right side of the fabric, and iron some more to the back side, so it can catch any leaking from the paint. Just remember that the wax side should be against the fabric. Press it on really well (don't iron, press). Then paint your fabric paint on and let it dry completely before you peel the freezer paper off. Then turn the fabric paint side down and press again so you can heat set the fabric paint. Then use it for whatever you want. In my case, I made a pillow with unbleached cotton.

put a pretty bow on it, and give it away! I'm making myself a number 3 pillow and a lumbar pillow that says Nest on it (a la pottery barn)... I'll post then when they get done.

Moby Wrap

There are a couple of babies being born soon so as I was thinking of what to do, I heard about Moby wraps. I guess I had seen them before but never paid much attention. But now...Oh I wish I had known about these when Afton was born.

So I "researched" them and found out all you really had to do was get a strip of fabric 20-30" wide and 5 yards long. and that's it. But I wanted these to be a little more...well, more. So I put a yard of cute fabric in the middle.

Washer Necklaces

So I really love these necklaces, but I can't afford them.

Then I found this tutorial and got an idea...

I guess ours aren't as good as the vintage pearl ones but well, I like them anyway

Tyson and I spent about an hour stamping washers, it was so fun

We're going to do some smooth ones next but it was fun to bang up the washers with a hammer :)

All in all it cost me about 8 dollars for the material (stamping set, washers (thanks dad), and beads) that will last me for about 100 necklaces.

Freezer Paper Stenciling

So I haven't done freezer paper stenciling before cause I thought it would be hard, But my SIL and I tried it out last weekend and I am hooked. So easy even I can do it...that's saying something.

Scripture Case

I made this scripture case a while ago for Rachael's baptism. I got the tutorial off the Polkadot Chair blog.

I really liked the way she did this bag but I did different sizing because I didn't realize at first that she made hers for compact scriptures, even though she said it right at the beginning.

I think I added a couple inches on everything and it ended up being a bit too big.

And you really can make it reversible. If I had thought of that I would have sewn things on a bit differently.

Anyway, It was a really fun project and didn't take any time at all.

I will post instructions later. The first one is actually flipped the wrong way, the lighter blue is the sky, the darker is the ocean, and they are going to be fish that Paul can velcro on and off. Another Felt Book

Poor, neglected Mini Frippery. Well, if any of you are like me, there has just been no time for crafts! Especially now during school, finals coming up, and the holidays. But I felt sorry for the blog, it hasn't had attention in a while, so I thought I'd post something.

I actually made this a long time ago, for my niece's first birthday. But I realized I hadn't posted it and the pictures were already on my computer and Afton is Finally sleeping...so enough of all the talk, here's some pictures.

Anya's Felt Matching Book

All of the things have a small piece of velcro on them. I just got the stick-on kind, and I don't think that's the best for felt, but I didn't want to sew through the letters.

Nephew's School Bag

Is everyone just too busy sewing and playing to post about it? It's been awfully quiet here. My nephew turned four yesterday, so I made this cute book bag for him. I now have plans for my niece who is five next week ... it was really fun!

Zebras are his favorite. This was great - I traced it onto fabric, colored it with crayons, then ironed it (make sure you put a paper towel over the picture so you don't get wax on your iron).

This inside fabric is probably my favorite. They only had the bright red straps, so that was a little disappointing, but I think it will be fine.

Beaded Socks

I made these cute socks for my nieces. I was saving them for birthdays, but then the 4th came along and I had to do some red, white, and blue ones. I love them. They're really easy (basically, just a chain crochet stitch) and really fast (a few hours and you have some snazzy socks!)

These are the instructions I used, but there are so many out there! I just did a Google search and came up with lots of different styles. Oh - and it may just be me, but I used a lot more beads than the instructions said, so make sure you string extra!

Busy, busy!

I have had lots of baby showers to go to recently so I've been sewing a lot for them. It's been so much fun! I would sew all day long if I could! On a side note, my best friend Susan and I are going to start a little etsy shop selling our baby gear. I like to make slings, nursing covers, appliqued/ ruffles onesies and baby legs. Susan does great diaper bags, purses, nursing covers and burp rags. I'll let everyone know how that is going! But back to the pictures:

Toy Bag Tutorial

I'm so excited about this one! This is the first project where I thought it up all myself and created it and it turned out just how I wanted it to! I'm so excited I just wanted to share it with you. I'm new to this so let me know if it doesn't make sense. I took lots of pictures to help my explaining.

What you'll need:

One 12 x 26 piece of fabric for the bag
Two 1.5 x 15 pieces of same or contrasting fabric for the strings {or you can use ribbon or rope or anything you want, just cut it at 15 "}

Strings:

{If you're doing ribbon or rope, skip steps 1-4 )

1. With your string fabric pieces, fold down one short end 1/4" and iron. Then again.

2. Fold the fabric in half; iron; and open back up.

3. Fold one long edge into the middle and iron, then the same for the other edge (so it's folded in thirds)

4. Then fold the fabric in half again, iron down, and top-stitch the

whole length.

Repeat for second string.

That's all for now with these, onto the bag:

5. Fold one of the long ends of the fabric down 1/2 in. and iron. fold down again and iron (you

can do this on both long ends but you don't need to.)

6. Iron down both the short ends 1/2 in. once

7. (This is going to be a confusing one) Place the short raw edge of the string (the side you didn't fold down) on the raw edge of the short side of the bag. Fold the bag fabric over the string so you can sew the edge of the bag closed without getting the string. Pin it down and sew the edge, Making sure you don't catch the ribbon in the stitch! keep the pin in for now.

8. When both short ends are sewn, fold the bag in half hamburger style so the right sides are

facing.

9. Sew the long edge with the raw edge first (the pinned side of the ribbons) together with a 1/4 in seam allowance. Sew over the ribbon a few times for durability.

10. Sew the folded edge next, starting from the bottom. Make sure you stop before you get

to the ribbons! I stopped at the top seam.

11. turn the bag right side out and iron. Tie a knot in the end of the ribbons if you want (it won't be a problem if you don't want to, I just did it for looks)

An optional way to do the bottom bag:

12. You can leave the bag as it is or you can do this: Turn the bag inside out again. fold the corner flat and pin it.

13. Sew straight across following the pin.

14. Trim the corner and turn right side out.

Ta Da! You're done. you can embellish as you want. Let me know if it's all totally confusing.

Felt Song Book

Hooray! I can post my book now, little Jo opened it. I got this idea from the quiet book from homemade by jill.

I loved it but I wanted to do it differently so I made it into a songbook. I'm actually really happy about the way it turned out.

Sweet Little Lambs

Just a quick post to show you the little stuffed lambs I've made recently. The pattern is from bit of whimsy dolls that I bought on artfire...go check out her shop...seriously cute stuff! This one I made for my niece who just turned 4:
And this one is for my own bebe:I made them with fake fur which made them harder to make, but much more cuddly than if I had just used chenille.

Easiest Scubbie Ever

So as I was craft-blog hopping, I found the Sydney Hyperbolic Crochet Coral Reef blog and thus began the inspiration. I've been trying to find a good scrubbie pattern and there it was. The site is a place where people from all over crochet a coral reef as a "woolly celebration of the intersection of higher geometry and feminine handicraft, and a testimony to the disappearing wonders of the marine world." It's really cool all of the designs they come up with, so I made my own little coral to be my scrubbie.

Materials:

Peaches and Cream Yarn

Crochet Hook- any size (I used size H)

NOTES:

sc=single crochet
You can use any basic stitch you want
Crochet in the front and back loops to make it sturdier
Worked in one continuous round

1. Make a Magic Ring. (Planet June has the best photo tutorial for this. You'll never go back to the old way)

2. Crochet 2 sc in each sc

Ta Da: that's all

Repeat Round 2 until you feel like it.

Finish: slip stitch into next stitch and fasten off. Weave in Ends. Trim the middle yarn

It starts out looking like this

After a few more rounds, it starts to get wavy

You can stop here if you want, or keep going.

These are my finished scrubbies.

The best part about this is, you can make them as big or little as you want, or until you run out of yarn or time. The big one takes about 15 min.

You can make at least 4 or 5 out of the small Peaches and Cream ball. These would be good to give with a bottle of dish soap as a bridal shower gift.

Crochet Project

I've never done a crochet project other than really simple single crochet ones - so this was a step for me. My sister-in-law patiently helped me the whole way through and didn't make fun when I had to take it apart to fix it and took months to finish! But it's finally done - yea!

I have been engulfed in crafts lately. After cleaning the house and doing homework, and in between taking care of the baby, I have a bit of time to work on my many projects I have started. My mom made my Afton this fabulous quilt:

Since I have never put a quilt together, it's still in these two pieces. I have also discovered the greatness of English Paper Piecing. I got the idea from here at Craftsanity, and the instructions from here.

And I'm making a mini one, for a doll blanket or something.

I did it a little bit different than the instructions though. I got the precut fabric from my aunt who got it from her mom who got it from her daughter who got it from her sister-in-law who got it from her mom. In other words, it's been through a lot of people and it's probably 50's fabric. The fabric's pretty cool and like Shayla said, if you hold onto something long enough, it'll come back in style.

I made this plastic bag holder cause I had them all over the place.

I also LOVE these. Dorset Buttons. All you need is plastic rings, embroidery floss (I just use the cheap stuff) or yarn and a large eye, blunt end needle. They are so fun.

I plan on putting them on crocheted hats or even a scrapbook page. I got the idea from craftstylish. And whenever I get to it, I'm making this scrappy quilt. I plan on having a jean back and it will be an outside quilt. This is one of the blocks. It looks ugly when put together but that's why it's being used outdoors.

PHEW: that's all for now. Notice how all of these are started but most are not finished :) My favorites right now are the paper quilting and the dorset buttons. You can take them anywhere, even on car rides.

Daybed coverlet and pillow shams

I wanted to show off the coverlet and pillow shams that I made for my wrought iron day bed in my guest room. I found this fabric on sale at Home Fabrics for such a great price and I bought it not knowing what I would make out of it. It was such an easy project and I love the way it turned out.

Paper Bag Album Tutorial

Yay! My first Tutorial!! Good thing it's an easy one. Anyway, here's how you make the paper bag photo album:

Materials:

3 Regular paper lunch sacks
Ribbon
Paper
Glue
Hole punch

Optional:

eyelets
brads
stamps
Stapler

Take your three paper sacks, fold them in the middle and punch 3 (or however many you want) holes on the folded edge. You can also just staple the end if you don't want to do the holes.

Open the bags and stack them on each other alternating the open ends of the paper bag.

Then close them like a book and tie a ribbon through each hole, or staple it closed or you can also do brads or eyelets or eyelets and ribbon.

Cut out 12 5x5 pieces of paper, and 3 slightly smaller pieces of paper.

Decorate the pages and glue them straight onto the bag.

The three slightly smaller pages are the ones that will go into the open ends of the paper bags. Just cut them 5x5 and trim a little bit off.

Decorate them and staple a ribbon to the page (or punch a hole and tie a ribbon through it), so you can pull the page out. These 3 pages are good for journaling or just more pictures.

I love making these. They even make good gifts :)

This is another idea I got from my sister-in-law. I bought the cheap little wooden letters from Roberts (I was lucky enough to get them al in the first try), quickly painted them and then sanded them.

My sister-in-law painted hers with a light color, then a dark color so you would see the light color when you sanded it. I just did it with one coat so I could see the wood.

I love this project. It took me probably 20 min at the most. My sister-in-law actually had them glue onto a board covered with fabric and then put them in picture frames (without the glass of course). It was so cute, but I didn't have the motivation to go that far so I just stuck them on the wall with sticky tack.

I finally finished something! I can only do short projects anymore apparently. Tonight, I whipped up some new lovies after almost losing one. I made a miniature version of the brick pattern quilt (tutorial found here) Put some super soft Minkie (aka cuddle flat) on the back with some taggies out the side and we are good to go...one for the baby and one for the wash! I just adore this Woodland Bloom fabric still...if only I could have bought a whole bolt of all of the fabrics in the line. *sigh*

My love of Freezer Paper

I discovered the art of freezer paper stenciling and dyeing your own clothes! I don't think I'll ever buy another logo-ed article of clothing again!! Very fun and very rewarding. A little time consuming for me because the exacto knife and I are not very chummy... but that's another story. I of course couldn't find the camera until the whole process was finished but here are the end results!

My baby is going to be born in the year of the ox... saw this for $35, figured I could do it for a whole lot cheaper! Dyed it blue and stenciled away!

This is red. I know it doesn't look that way in the photos but trust me it's a heathery red. Nate is peeved because he thinks our baby is going to be confused for a girl.

Arizona for Nate with a little heart over Tucson. This has to be my favorite out of the two onesies! I told Nate we'll just put blue jeans on him, blue socks, blue blanket and a blue binky wherever we go in this top. :)

This has nothing to do with freezer paper, but I wanted to share the blanket I made for Chelseas darling baby Afton. It's just two pieces of fleece and I crocheted the edges. I was very excited to make a girl blanket!

A New Skill

Well, we'll see if it's a "skill" when I'm done :) Lisa taught me how to knit dishcloths so that will probably be something I do over and over again. It's really fun but I think it's harder than crocheting cause you have to handle two things at once. (Opree calls it multeetaskin'). Anyway, it's a new favorite.

Made: board books

This is a very belated post. I made 4 board books for Christmas for the different babies in our lives. One for Jocelyn (8 months), one for Paul (18 months), one for Landon (6 months), and one for our newest little baby Afton (2 weeks at the time).

I got the idea from Jill and got the books from blank slate board books. They send you the books and some labels and a CD with the template on it so that you can print directly on your labels...I took some photographs of the babies and their families and edited them with Picnik and then slapped them on... It was very easy and super fun.

When Jocelyn is older, I want to have her write and illustrate a story directly on the labels and "publish" her book. There are lots of fun things you can do with them. Here are the pages from her book. (I didn't finish the other ones in time to take pictures before they needed to be wrapped up and given away)

I finally finished a project! I am a notorious craft- starter. My house is strewn with the corpses of half finished projects. Hmmm... what a visual. :) Well my friend Maranda is an amazing cook/seamstress/crocheter/mom, basically great at everything. She has a sewing room that makes me drool and one of those lovely computerized applique/embroidery sewing machines and an endless supply of fabric. My moms friend sent me some darling yellow flannel but I didn't have a clue of what to do with it. Told Maranda, and she suggested a beginners quilt for me. So I went over one night, used some of her blue flannel, and she got me started. I was able to go home and do the whole thing by myself! No supervision! I can quilt ladies and gentlemen! So now I have a fun tummy time quilt for the baby (who is coming in 5 weeks by the way).

2. Tie as many ribbons (in coordinating colors) as you can fit on the handle in a square knot.

Fun, quick baby blanket

My friend (who's been there since I was about five!) is having a baby this month, so her aunt threw a baby shower a few weeks ago. I made this really cute flannel blanket in about three days (between work and class). It was really fun - just cut squares of flannel (front and back), stick a piece of batting in the middle, sew an "x" across the squares. Then just sew all the squares together (backs together), clip the edges, and wash!

Tutorial: 7 patch quilt

Okay, so I'm not the type to start cutting and sewing without having any directions to follow (which is why I love tutorials), but I'm trying to branch out. I bought the fabric for this quilt with a pattern in mind and then changed my mind about it and just started doing my own thing... I was going to just do a bunch of 9 patch blocks and sew it all together, but I had one fabric that I really wanted to showcase and little 4" squares just don't do it, so I made a 7 patch. The end result was pretty fun because it is such a versatile quilt block, there are so many variations you could use.

Here's how you do it:

You can start with pieces of fabric that are any size you want or scraps from your stash. I got fat quarters. Then you pair up the fabrics that you think look good next to each other and iron them together, right sides facing with starch so they stick together a little bit. Then cut each pair of fabrics into 4"x4" squares. Move them carefully into a stack so they don't separate. They're completely ready to sew at this point. Cut all your fabrics this way and lay them out next to your sewing machine so you can sew all of them at once. Stitch one edge of each of the squares together with a 1/4" seam allowance. All seams in this project are 1/4". After you sew the first piece, don't cut the thread, just feed the next piece in and keep going until you've finished all of your squares. This method is called chain piecing. It saves time and thread. I separated the pieces a little more than usual so you could see what was going on.Now you have your twosies. Cut the threads between each one and press all seams toward the darker fabric so that it doesn't show as much once you're done. Do that to all the pieces and then lay them out again by your machine so you can see what you've got.Then take two of your twosies and sew them together to make a 4 patch. The only pinning I did was to just pin the two pieces of fabric together where the seams meet to make sure they line up. It's best if each block is different so you get the random look when you're done. Press seams.Then take your 4 patch blocks and sew another twosie on top of it to make a 6 patch. Press seams.Then take the fabric that you really want to show off (in this case a yellow and blue toile), and cut it in strips of 4"x11". This will make up the third column. Sew it onto either side of the block, on the side that has 3 squares. The finished block looks like this:You may have to do a little bit of trimming to even up some of the sides. Then lay the blocks out on your design table (I like to say that because it makes me feel like Fons & Porter, but really I just lay it on my living room floor) and move them around until you are happy with how it looks. As I said before, there are a lot of variations in how you can put them together. You can do something more random:

Or something more organized:Once you decide on a layout, sew the blocks in one row together and press seams and do the same for the rest of the rows. Make sure you're lining up each seam.Then sew the rows together, and press the seams. Again, make sure you line up the seams. If you don't want a border, then you're done! Quilt or tie and bind as you like. If you do want a border then you're almost there! You can put as many borders on in whatever thickness you like. I did my inner border 3" wide and my outer border 6" wide. Cut your fabrics into 3" strips and sew as many strips as you need to cover all 4 sides. Repeat for the outer border. And...Voila!! You are finished. Quilt or tie and bind as you like. I'll post a finished product picture once mine gets back from the quilter.

Tutorial: Brick pattern quilt

This quilt is very self-explanatory, so you might say, "why make a tutorial for it?" I've decided to put a tutorial up for those of you who just need a little encouragement and a little guidance; this is for someone who is too hesitant to just try anything without instructions (like I used to be :) Buckle up friends, 'cause here we go:

Find your favorite line of fabric and buy a charm pack (or 2 or 3). What is a charm pack? It is a sample of each fabric in a line of fabrics that is already washed, ironed, and cut to a 5" square, and is made to look good together, thus making your job much easier. For this one, I used the blues and oranges from Lila Tueller's Woodland Bloom line, which I have been stalking all summer and it just came out!

Arrange all the squares to be how you want them on your design board (aka my living room floor). Make it as big or as small as you want, just remember that each square is going to end up being only 4 and 1/2" by the time you're done with it.Next: take every other column and sew the squares together to make strips. Press the seams to one side or the other (usually toward the darker fabric so you don't see it as much). I pressed them all the same way going the direction that I was going to sew it together so the seams wouldn't get caught on the footplate of the machine...I'm lazy... what can I say!Then, take the other columns that you haven't sewn together yet, and pick up the square on the end. Cut it in half and place one half on the bottom of the column and one half on the top. Then sew all these squares together into strips.Sew all the strips together. Don't worry if the ends don't quite match up, we'll fix it later...that's the beauty of this design: no pinning or matching seams...lots of room for error!Press your new seams to one side or the other:
Take your straight edge and rotary cutter and even the ends up:And voila! Easiest quilt top ever! Quilt and bind as you wish and enjoy how little time that took! This makes the perfect gift because it took you all of one hour but it's a gorgeous thoughtful handmade gift that anyone will enjoy!Here is this same layout in some different fabrics...This one is Moda's Nest:Another Woodland Bloom with all the colors in it:Moda's Portugal:Moda's At Water's Edge:And one that I can't remember what it is!

Ode to a finished project

I finally finished two projects this last weekend (only because they didn't take that long to begin with although it took me about triple the amount of time it should have) And also here are some other projects that got finished this weekend. I first posted pictures of the fabric for Lexie's graduation quilt on April 29th (I'm not kidding...) And she finally finished it on Saturday! Here she is resting her tired quilting head on the machine for emotional support...And here's the happy quilter with her first ever made-by-her quilt! Congrats lex! I love our Brown girl mothers. News travels fast with them! So as a few of you probably know, I am as my dad says "in a family way" or as Emma says my "eggo is preggo". Take your pick. :) I've known for a while but didn't want to make it public to the blogging community. But this has given me a chance to start working on some cute craft ideas. I just got back from Idaho where my best friend and I experimented. We made nursing covers and appliqued some onesies and made some burb rags. I'm no a very good applique-er so don't mind the edges and we couldn't quite figure out the thickness and width of the right stitch so it doesn't show up very well on the outsides of the applique.

New Bag

Lately I've really been wanting to make a good bag for everyday use. I found this cute bag pattern on the Ric Rac blog and I loved it. (I just made a few changes.) I especially loved the idea of putting padding in the middle so it has more body. And I bought the fabric and remembered that it was the exact same as one shayla used for one of her quilts. hmm, no wonder why I loved it.

However, I thought it would be a little bigger so I could fit some books in it, but I don't mind making another one that's bigger. It was a fun bag to make.

Craft Weekend Warm-up

Chelsea and I warmed up our crafting muscles for the big craft day tomorrow. I also broke in my new machine. I got it because my old one is a 1950's singer and it does a fabulous straight stitch, but nothing else... so this machine can do some applique, which I've been wanting to do for a long time. So far, I love it, even though it's not the fanciest machine on the block. I finally got around to doing a baby girl quilt top that I've had the fabric for for quite awile. This is just the quilt top, so I'll post it when it's quilted and bound, but I love the fabric. This is from the village shop's blog and it's called multi-stripe baby quilt. It's soooo easy. I think it took my an hour and 45 minutes total.

Chelsea and I made 3 nursing covers for Sylvia's daughter in law's (step daughters?? I don't know what to call them). I chose the fabric and cut them out, and chelsea did the sewing. I wanted to keep the polka dotted one for myself. Chelsea also made some Stardust cloth baby shoes from the scraps of my baby quilt I made and from the nursing covers. I love the quilted shoes! Definitely going to have to try that again. After seeing these cute polka dotted shoes, I was really mad I didn't buy more of that fabric. I love it.

A boxy bag that I loved so much that she gave it to me :)

My fam bought this yarn at Sin City Yarn in San Francisco while they were on vacation. It was my dad's idea for Chelsea to make a scarf for Grandma out of it because she looooooves soft things and the color green. It was $15 bucks a skein (yowza!) and it took 3 skeins, but it is literally the softest thing I have ever felt.

Nursing Cover

I never posted this because it's been in use too much to photograph, but I highly recommend this tutorial to anyone interested in making one either for yourself or for an expectant mama. Super easy to make and soooo nice to have for nursing...much better than a blanket.

I am obsessed with paisley, and this was the ONLY paisley print in the WHOLE store, and since I bought the fabric the day I had the baby, I wasn't really in the mood to go to another store with my swollen feet and belly! :) But I think it's cute nonetheless.

Fishing Game

I finished this almost a month ago but never posted it. I got the idea from Whip Up and it was super easy and fast-perfect for beginner sewers and let's be honest...what kid doesn't love fishing games?! I made my fishing game with rainbow Ric Rac and bright fun colors. I had to look in many a store to find something magnetic for the eyes, but I finally ended up with fancy sparkly brads for scrapbooking after I walked up and down every aisle at the craft store with a magnet in hand checking every button, snap and brad! (I'm not joking)

The brads worked well, but I found with the first set I made for my niece that it was still a little hard for really young kids to get the fish all the way out of the "water", so this time I put little magnets between the two brads on the inside of the fish before I sewed it up and that works really well.

I also finished a baby shower gift for a friend...2 burpies ans some cloth shoes. These are my standard baby gifts any more so I hope you don't get sick of seeing them! I love the fabric for the shoes. Is the fabric too girly with the flowers? Hope not...

It's 12" and is made with thin chenille yarn. It was a fairly difficult pattern. I'm glad I did it, but probably wouldn't do it again! (I'm into instant gratification projects anymore...) Here's the Itty Bitty Baby Dress from Made by Rae. I made the larger of the two sizes and it's still a little big for my now 9 pounder. Some Stardust cloth baby shoes and a Heather Bailey headband to match.

Blessing Afghan

Although I started this about 10 months ago, I just finished this afghan for the baby blessing the night before. The pattern comes from Vanna White's A to Z crochet that I inherited from Grandma, It was easier than it looked and turned out really soft with TLC's plush yarn that I used. You're supposed to thread ribbon between each section, but I liked it how it was.

Also, Molly at the Village Shop blog had a quilt pattern giveaway, and I won it! I'm so excited to make this cute Princess and the Pea quilt. It has a bunch of fabric mattresses stacked on top of each other with a "P" at the bottom.
